Event # 31 - Sport
Aerobatics
Interviewed at 8am doing practice was Kevin Morgan (pictured) from the Auckland
Free Flight Club. He has only being doing control line for 3 years, and to
the editor
Seemed to be doing OK. The wind was gusting which clearly did not help matters.
His nicely built model was powered by a OS46LA. This event allows a variety
of models, generally powered with engines from .25 to .46. This year there
were 14 contestants, one of the larger events. Laurie Chrystall, a veteran
of 30 years in the sport was seen getting ready for judging at 8am. The strong
wind put paid to the chances of many through models being blown out of the
sky. Junior, Ross Duncan was most unfortunate with his model due to the wind,
as were Adrian Wellington, Rob Wallace and Phil Smith. The competition was
very close, with Bryce Gibson narrowly missing 3 rd place. He flew his combat
wing extremely well, but low K factors on hand launch and landing cost him
a top 3 place.
Steve Biggins, Kevin Morgan and Dave Ackery flew very well with Steve putting
in the best flight on the day in the last round to clinch the event. Graeme
Duncan and Richard McFadden also did well to survive in the conditions. Adrian,
Chris and Rob were flying impressively until their models crashed. The judge
for the event was Lauri Chrystall. Many thanks to Andrew Robinson who processed
the scores.

33 Slow Combat
Contest Director: Bryce Gibson reported
Postponed from yesterday because of high winds, Slow Combat got underway at 1pm. As usual the early bouts were mixed but later there were some excellent bouts between some of the "non name" flyers, a standout being the one between Andrew Robinson and Chris 'where's the transmitter' Tank. Danny Walker had motor problems late in the day to end his run. The final between Glen and Bryce was streaky with Glenn losing a cut on the glide and then being plagued with an erratic motor on his borrowed (from Bryce!) model. Thanks to all who helped.

037 FAI F2D Combat
Contest Director: Bryce Gibson reports
High wind made conditions difficult in this fast tricky class. All pilots
showed signs of rusty flying but the top 3 place getters are all planning
on going to the World Champs in Germany in 2002. Some fairly average combat
saw the advantage of excess horsepower for Bryce. Thanks to all who pitched
in to help, Martin Szeto, Neil
Lickfold and others.

# 034 FAI F2B Aerobatics
Contest Director Laurie Chrystall
The wind had lessened somewhat, so stunt got under way with Steve Biggins
being the judge. Laurie Chrystall flew his Miss BJ model first. Don Robinson
flying his Magnum had difficulty with wind gusts as did Allan Lawrence also
flying a Magnum. Kevin Barnes flying his own Stalker 50-powered model went
head to head with Owen Rogers flying his LA46 powered Spectra. Danny Walker
made a return to stunt flying by coming 3 rd with his Dewoitine.

Event 039 FAI F2A Speed
Contest Director: Andrew Robinson
Held at the same time as Percentage Speed, with the same weather, but it was
a hard day at the circle for some. Brian Howser broke two models and didn't
record a time. Neil Lickfold struggled all morning breaking several props
and was down in airspeed, 250km/h, which left Callum Agnew to post one reasonable
time of 260km/h to win the event. He was using a Russian 'ZALP' motor and
model combination. Thanks to the timekeepers who helped out.

040 Class 1-5% Speed
A calm morning and cloudless sky greeted the contestants. Adrian Wellington
set the early pace with 235km/h closely followed by Bill Bell. Rob Collins
got one flight in before breaking the model and was only 3 percent points
behind Bill. Callum Agnew won the competition with 229.6km/h for 96.88% of
the record and Richard McFadden was second with 219.4km/h for 92.57%. Thanks

Event 038 Classic
Stunt
Event Director Laurie Chrystall
What a lovely day to fly classic stunt! Thanks for Owen Rogers for acting
as stunt judge, and to Don Robinson who crunched the numbers. Models flown
included an Argus (Allen Lawrence), a Thunderbird (Don Robinson), a Spitfire
(Ross Duncan), a Showman (Jay McFadden, and a Nobler (Laurie Chrystall). There
was close competition for top placings with Laurie Chrystall coming first.
Jay McFadden flew competently as did Ross Duncan. Both these lads are only
12. Well done boys. Hope to see you attempting more of the stunt pattern next
year.

36 - Diesel Goodyear
Contest Director - Bill Bell reports:
Dave Ackery won the event with some newly acquired C/L skills. Well done.
Adrian Wellington flew his Ohm Special Taipan blackhead powered model into
second place. Richard McFadden had Laurie Chystall fly his Eta powered Ohm
Special into third place. Difficult restarts made a higher placing difficult.
Callum Agnew's model damaged it's undercarriage and was withdrawn.

Event Director Laurie Chrystall
Brian Howser had Andrew Robinson flying his modified Magic B racer. Ashley
Keeling ably pitted Laurie Chrystall's Super Tiger 29model. A line break put
paid to Brians chances, and a split fuel tank ended Lauries run. These 2 models
were travelling around 160kmh. Adrian Wellington flew on steadily flying Richard
McFaddens' Dalseman to victory.
